This information note examines illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing as a major threat to marine ecosystems, global environmental benefits, economies, food security, and coastal livelihoods. It highlights the environmental, economic, social, governance, and security impacts of IUU fishing, and identifies strategic opportunities for the GEF to build on its existing work. These include strengthening international and regional cooperation; enhancing transparency and technology-enabled monitoring; improving enforcement capacity; engaging communities and the private sector; and promoting sustainable fisheries practices to safeguard ocean health.
