The Scientific and Technical Advisory Panel (STAP) provides independent scientific and technical advice to the Global Environment Facility (GEF), ensuring that its investments are grounded in the best available science, evidence, and innovation.
STAP identifies emerging issues, promotes integrated and evidence-based approaches, and supports the design of impactful, resilient, and scalable projects across all GEF focal areas: biodiversity, chemicals and waste, climate change mitigation, climate change adaptation, international waters, land degradation, and Integrated Programs.
Comprising a Chair, six expert Panel Members, two Senior Advisors, supported by a dedicated Secretariat hosted by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). The Secretariat provides both substantive and operational support to enable the effective delivery of the Panel’s responsibilities.
STAP works closely with scientists, practitioners, and GEF entities to convene expert dialogues, review project proposals, and generate targeted research that strengthens the scientific and technical foundation of GEF policies, programs, and projects.
STAP operates as an independent advisory body within the GEF Partnership. It plays a critical role in ensuring GEF initiatives are scientifically sound, strategically aligned, and capable of driving transformational change to address global environmental challenges.
