Considerations for conservation management in the Anthropocene

Human-driven changes are transforming ecosystems at scales and speeds that challenge traditional conservation practices. This STAP Information Note examines what it means to protect biodiversity and sustain ecosystem services in the Anthropocene and outlines three priority actions for the GEF. It recommends identifying and safeguarding climate refugia, i.e., areas buffered from climate impacts that can anchor biodiversity persistence; strengthening ecological connectivity by managing large conservation mosaics that link habitats, support collaborative governance, and advance environmental justice; and designing restoration efforts around future climate realities to ensure the continued delivery of provisioning, regulating, supporting, and cultural services. Together, these approaches provide a forward-looking framework to help the GEF enhance resilience and maintain global environmental benefits in a rapidly changing world.
