At CBD COP17, the Scientific and Technical Advisory Panel (STAP) will join the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and the GEF Independent Evaluation Office for a moderated side event examining how science, evidence, data and emerging technologies can help accelerate implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF). The session will explore how advances in biodiversity data, monitoring approaches and artificial intelligence (AI), alongside decades of experience in biodiversity programming, can strengthen decision-making, target investments, monitor progress and support adaptive management. It will also consider the opportunities and risks associated with these approaches, including data gaps, algorithmic bias, unequal access to technology, and the responsible and rights-based use of Indigenous Peoples’ and local knowledge. Drawing on perspectives from governments, scientists, Indigenous Peoples and local communities, youth innovators and the private sector, the discussion will identify practical lessons and entry points for translating science, knowledge and investment into measurable and lasting outcomes for nature and people.
